Children are natural scientists and the backyard is the perfect laboratory. Whether you are digging in the garden with kids, chasing butterflies and other bugs with your children, or studying animals with junior naturalists, you are sure to find plenty of ways to explore nature.

I really dug the ideas in the Backyard Science Linky (get it? digging? for backyard science?) of the Smart Summer Challenge*!

Some of the ones from our participants (and other hostesses) that caught my eye were:

Dried Gourd Bird Houses/Feeders from Life in the Unknown

Backyard Rock Classification at Deceptively Educational

Nature’s Paintbox at A New Bohemia

“Hank” at McCrenshaw’s

Pretend Camping at Make Early Learning Fun!

Garden Stepping Stone at My Little Brood

Is There a Fairy in Your Garden at Kitchen Counter Chronicles

Leaf People at Surviving a Teacher’s Salary

Park Explorer Kits on Teach Mama

Marshmallow Shooters at Pink and Green Mama

I’ve shared my own family’s Smart Summer activities this week for our Backyard Science Week:

The Butterfly Life Cycle

Butterfly Coffee Filter Craft

F is for Flower

Flower Anatomy Dissection

Bean Plant Life Cycle

* Recently I co-hosted the “Smart Summer Challenge” with MaryLea of Pink and Green Mama and Amy of TeachMama.

I’m moving my weekly themed “round-ups” of submissions to new posts to make them easier to find.
