Children with Cat in the Hat Craft Hats

Dr. Seuss is a favorite at our house (and probably yours, too) for his fun language play and timeless messages.

We put together a quick craft to go with The Cat in the Hat.

The Cat in the Hat CraftMaterials

  • white posterboard
  • red construction paper
  • glue
  • scissors

Directions

1. Cut out a tall hat shape from the posterboard.

1b. Note: If you do not have enough posterboard for an entire hat shape, you can cut a band out separately (like we did).

2. Cut a second band for the hat and set this aside.

3. Glue alternating bands of red and white to the hat (or if you are using white posterboard, you can just glue the red ones on).

4. Staple or tape the outer ends of the extra hat band to the hat band already attached to the hat. Place the hat on the child and tape or staple closer to the child’s head to fit.  Notes: I think I made the bands too thick this time as we’ve had better fits with skinner bands.  Also, this time we used tape but I think that staples worked better in the past.

Educational Connections:

  • Literacy: Use refrigerator magnets or building blocks with painter’s tape to make groups of rhyming words found in the book (for example: mat, cat, hat).
  • Mathematics: The bands on the cat’s hat form a pattern. What color would come next? Find other examples of patterns.
  • Physical Education: Play a game to see home many objects you can balance on plate.  Now see how many you can balance on your head.
  • Pro-Social Skills: What games do you play inside? What games can you only play outside? Why? Why is it important to always clean-up after you play?

  1. I love how the kids can do so much of this craft themselves. I also like the teaching tips to go along with the book. Thanksfor celebrating Dr. Seuss’ Birthday and for adding this project to the Dr. Seuss Collection at http://www.obSEUSSed.com. -Victoria

  2. Happy Birthday indeed! I read Fox in Socks so many times that day! I finally stopped stumbling over the beetles in the bottle! That’s a lot of times. 🙂
